There is a new company in Florida now called Florida Homestead Check. They have a really cool product called a Homestead Check that will take information that you provide and check the various government databases and tell you whether or not you have filed for homestead, whether you have filed for “portability”, whether you have any market valuation issues on the tax rolls, and whether you forgot to file for an exemption that you qualify for (there are lots of different ones). It costs $100 for a “Homestead Check” and they also offer an annual monitoring program that is $75 a year. It’s especially important to check into your filing status and valuations before you sell your home or else you could lose portability savings that get wiped out at the time of the closing.
