After you file
You would not be able to file your return and claim any tax benefits related to your child without the Social Security number, so either an amended return or filing an extension would be your options.
You can file your return without including your child or any of the associated tax benefits. Then later you can amend your return to add your dependent. Amended returns must be mailed and can take some time to be processed.
Your other choice would be to file an extension. This may be a better option as long as you expect to have the information that you need before the extension deadline (October 15, 2018). This would still allow you to file your return electronically. If you expect to have a balance due on your return, you will need to pay with your extension request before April 17, 2018.
