My father excluded his Foreign Income tax for California tax from 2013 to 2017, he received a notice saying he owed $2k/year, is there a way to protest/exclude this?
My father is a current resident in California. He has filed taxes in the US since 2007. For the years 2013 to 2017, he did not realize that California no longer allows Foreign Tax exclusion.
It is 2017, and he received a notice stating that he owes the state of California around 2k dollars for not including the foreign income tax into his gross income.
Since this is only for 2013, he is worried that it will be around 2k for each year since 2013 til 2017.
Is there a way to protest this or deduct the tax somehow? If he can not come up with the money given the amount of time, what will happen to him?
