After you file
An EIN is always in the following format. XX-XXXXXXX and never has letters. You may be looking at a control number or your employer may have made a mistake.

After you file
While this is generally true, dealing with taxes always includes exceptions. Governmental entities often have the EIN followed by a letter. To say it never has letters, would not be correct.
