After you file
You cannot change a tax return that has been filed and is pending until the IRS either accepts or rejects it. The IRS will not begin receiving tax returns until Jan. 28 so you must wait until after that date to get an acceptance or rejection notice. If your return is rejected, you can make the correction and fix the reason for rejection if it is something else, and resubmit your return.
If your return is accepted, you must wait until the IRS processes your return and sends your refund (if you are getting one). You must then prepare, print, sign and mail an amended return form 1040X. That form may not be available until the end of January or even into February.
