After you file

If you itemize your deductions on Federal Schedule A, you can enter state taxes paid in a variety of ways (withholding, estimated, amended, audit assessment, etc).

  • Go to Federal Taxes- Deductions and Credits, "I'll Choose What I Work On"
  • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid and click Start or Update next to Other Income Taxes
  • Click Start or Update next to Balance due on your 2015 state taxes..-or- Payments for 2014 or prior (if its a pre-2015 state return).
  • Enter the number. If you paid something when you originally filed your 2015 state(s) return, make sure you add the numbers together. You are just correcting the amount to reflect the amendment.
Whether it was an amendment, original return amount, or assessment from agency doesn't actual matter. All of these categories are for the sake of transparency inside of Turbo Tax and on your worksheets. The IRS will only see the final figure of total state taxes paid during calendar year 2016.
