After you file

Amending your return is like starting a separate return to adjust for the first. In other words, if you had a refund originally, you may still receive the refund you expected prior to amending (we recommend waiting to mail your amendment until after your original return has been accepted and refund received).

Since the original return and the amended return are looked at separately, once you choose to amend your additional refund or additional balance due begins at $0 and will only show changes based upon calculation increases or decreases from the amended return. Revising a social security number would have no financial impact to the expected refund or balance due.
