Student sent 1099-MISC instead of W2?
Hello,
I have a big question and I really am at a loss for what to do. I have filed an extension for taxes because I am utterly confused by a 1099-MISC I received.
I applied for an internship program at my college (I am currently a sophomore) and worked there for a couple of months. I quit around December 2019. Each of my paystubs was around 200 dollars, and I paid the federal tax, social security, medicare, and state tax. I assumed I was an employee, and there were more than 20 other people in this internship program.
Now that I received this 1099-MISC when I go to file at TurboTax, it mentions that I never paid taxes and I owe. My payment was also put under line 7 "Nonemployee Compensation" but I was an employee. I was most definitely not self-employed. I truly believe I should have received a W2.
This is super confusing to me since this is my second time filing taxes since I graduated high school.
How should I move forward? Was this actually a mistake or was it wrong for me to assume I was an employee? Do I contact my previous employer?
I was thinking of contacting other people that worked with me and seeing if they also received 1099 also. But what boggles me the most is that I owe when I NEVER withheld taxes.
Please help
