You win the prize! That's it! Yes, Schedule D lines 17 and 20 do have checkmarks. And yes, it was due to a different situation. Last year I had an overall loss, this year a gain. And I now noticed the tiny print after the line 20 "yes" checkmark that says specifically "Don't complete lines 21 and 22 below."
So everything is working correctly. That explains it. Thanks!
