I did this myself last year. I would not presume that the IRS is going to refund the money. I have waited 12 months and have not received anything back.
11 months ago, I filed an amendment (which of course is stuck on the backlog) as a way to protect me so I will eventually get the refund via the amendment.
My thinking is how does the IRS really know you overpaid unnecessarily or is there an income item that has not posted that will consume the credit?
