Get your taxes done using TurboTax

It's more likely TurboTax is not recognizing  the way your income is entered rather than a lack of expenses.  A 1099-NEC is not the same as a 1099-NEC.  You will need to enter the form as it's identified and if you are truly self-employed, you may want to review What self-employed expenses can I deduct? to see if there are any of your own expenses you can deduct!

You will want to delete and re-enter your form so you can break this loop.  To delete, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Within your return in TurboTax Online search for Schedule C.
  2. Click the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. If you get to a self-employment summary screen, delete the self-employment income line with the trash can icon.
  4. If you get to the question Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? answer No
  5. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen.
  6. Click on Delete a Form
  7. Scroll down to your Schedule C and Schedule SE and click Delete if they are still there.
  8. Go back and search for 1099-MISC (or -NEC if that's what you entered) and do steps 1-7 again for that form specifically

To re-enter your form please follow these steps:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax
  2. Search for self employed income (use this exact phrase, don't add a hyphen) and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results
  3. Answer Yes on the Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? screen
    • If you land on the Your 2021 self-employed work summary page, select Review next to the work you're adding income for
  4. Answer the questions on the following screens until you arrive at Let's enter the income for your work
  5. Select the form that applies to your situation and Continue
  6. You can enter the info from your 1099 form on the following screens
