Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Your tax return may get rejected if last year’s is still pending. Here’s how to fix the problem.

If you’re one of the millions of Americans still waiting on your 2020 tax return, you’ll need to take a special step to avoid a rejection for this year’s electronic filing, according to the IRS.

When filing digitally, you validate your return with the previous year’s adjusted gross income. Typically, your tax filing software has these details if you’re a returning customer. Otherwise, you can manually enter the numbers.

However, the validation process changes with a pending 2020 return.  If last year’s return is still in limbo, you’ll need to enter $0 for your 2020 AGIwhen filing online.  That way you can file electronically, and you don’t have to file a paper return.  This applies to only digital filers.

(If this does not work, you may also need to uncheck the box that you filed last year?)

With millions of people in this boat, Turbotax should have put that in their updates.

UPDATE:  After having my tax return be reject 2x, I put 0 in for AGI and it was accepted.
