In your son's return, he must have indicated that he can be claimed as dependent on someone else's return. Here is where he can check.
- Instruct him to go to the MY INFO section of his return.
- Edit next to his name and continue
- In the screen that asks Do any of These Apply to XXX.
- Make sure the box isn't checked that asks if someone else can Claim XXX on their Return.
