@ghrad What I usually advise people who have received a check that they know they will have to repay to do is deposit it and not spend it. There isn't any reason to leave it sitting on a piece of paper not gathering interest - stick it in your savings account. Especially since NYSIT may have a valid reason for returning the money to you even though they haven't told you what it is yet. Put it in a bank account and let it sit there until you receive a letter.
