Get your taxes done using TurboTax
I waited patiently for the Form 8915-F update, but I finally got frustrated and went elsewhere. I have a printed copy of last year's return prepared by TurboTax, so I was able to manually enter the requested figures where the online software prompted me to do so. But for some reason, my calculated refund didn't change even when I tried two alternatives: (1) not repaying 1/3 of my loan amount and paying tax on the additional income, and (2) repaying 1/3 of my loan amount and not taking a tax hit. I knew that the only way I could legally get the calculated refund is if I make a repayment to my IRA before the April deadline, but somehow the TurboTax software let me get through the entire federal review with my refund intact, even after I entered "0" for the amount repaid to the IRA.
I went to FreeTaxUSA, followed the same prompts with the same figures. Lo and behold, the software showed a lower refund if I didn't make an IRA repayment, and a higher one if I did -- just as it should be. I went ahead and filed with FreeTaxUSA. I won't be going back to TurboTax, which could have been an audit waiting to happen.
