Underpayment Penalty
I had a home sale with capital gains taxes owed at the end of September. And for the past years I had no taxes owed, so my understanding was there would be no penalty, at least from federal, for not paying estimated taxes. (Plus it was late in the year.) Yet Turbo Tax calculated a late fee for both Federal and California income taxes.
Any help would be appreciated. There were no questions in Turbo Tax, such as, "Did you owe income taxes last year?" And my joint return has been done in Turbo Tax for many years in a row.
