Get your taxes done using TurboTax
A 13 year old does not qualify for the dependent care credit.
For the basic child tax credit, here are some things to check:
- You must indicate the child lived in your home more than half the year (7 months or more), or you must indicate that the custodial parent has given you a form 8332.
- The child must have a valid SSN.
- Check that the child's birthdate is correct.
- Make sure you did not indicate that the child is married or will file a joint return.
- Make sure you did not indicate the child was supported more than 50% by someone else.
- If you are living together unmarried with the child's other parent, answer "no" to the question about a custody agreement. That only applies to parents who are divorced or separated and live apart and share custody.
