Get your taxes done using TurboTax

As of 2/24/2022, the error described below (and by others, such as EdRaleigh in his excellent post) has NOT been corrected.

2021 Form 2210 - Actual withholding tax method.

Please look at the Tax Withholding by Quarter input sheet under Other Tax Situations/Additional Tax Payments/Actual Withholding. The TT data input sheet asks user to input the amount of actual withholding tax for the second quarter period 4/16/2021 - 7/15/2021.  This period is incorrect. The correct period is 4/15/2021 - 6/15/2021. Likewise, the third quarter payment period should be 6/16/2021 - 9/15/21. Should be a relatively easy fix. Otherwise, a customer relying on TT input criteria might understate its estimated tax penalty for the second quarter of 2021.

Form 2210, Part III, Line 11(a) calculation.

There appears to be a programming logic error.  Any overpayment from 2020 that was applied to 2021 estimated tax payments is treated as a 2021 estimated tax payment made on April 15, 2021.  See 2021 Form 2210 Instuctions, page 4. However, TT is subtracting from that overpayment any amount paid by taxpayer with respect to its 2020 income tax liability with the 2020 Form 4868 extension of time to file, which was required to be filed by 5/17/2021. This reduction is incorrect in my view given the purpose of Form 2210 and IRS instructions. In accordance with 2021 Form 2210 instructions, which were finalized by the IRS and released January 28, 2022, the full amount of any 2020 overpayment applied to 2021 should be included in Line 11(a).  Again, appears to be a relatively easy fix, but even apparently simple fixes to a layman are often not so simplistic from a programming perspective.
