Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Hello everyone!

After I located this thread (thank God!) I'm relieved to find that we are in a similar situation too.

My wife and I both worked and stayed in New Jersey until June 2021. Thereafter, I continued working and stayed in NJ till the rest of 2021. My wife moved to Maryland in July 2021 and started working there, and is  still there at present. We also had a daughter born to us who lives with my wife. I make weekend trips as schedule permits.

I had a few doubts regarding the Federal and state tax filings in our situation.

1) We are planning to file Married filing Jointly(MFJ) for the Federal tax. I hope that is okay.

How do we go about the state taxes? I am a resident of NJ and my wife was a part year resident of both NJ and MD.

2) So I guess we are looking at three state returns: NJ only for me and part years for NJ and MD for wife. Is it possible to file such a return through the Turbotax Deluxe with State (PC download) version?

3) So can we download an included state and pay to download another state? I am not sure about the cost.

4) How do we actually go about filing these state returns? I think we need to file as Married filing separately (MFS). I have only used the Turbotax online free edition till now(we both used to live in NJ) and would appreciate some help with the PC(download) method.

Edit: I was also looking up information and I'm not sure whether we have to file in the same status in either of NJ or MD as MFJ as we planned to use in federal returns. That could unfortunately cause a lot of tax liabilities in both states, considering each spouse didn't work in the other's state for the last 6 months. This is so confusing.

5) Lastly, is there a way to e-file these 3 different state returns? Or would they have to be paper only? I couldn't locate the charges to efile though.

Any other suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read through my post.
