Even if you selected File By Mail, you won't be able to print and file until the Schedule A has been finalized. You are correct that the worksheet doesn't get mailed in. The worksheet is also not part of your e-filed return. But the Schedule A is; so if you are reporting home mortgage interest, the worksheet is a necessary piece of your Schedule A. The Schedule A uses the Deductible Home Mortgage Interest worksheet to calculate your mortgage interest deduction. No returns using that worksheet can be filed until its accuracy has been confirmed. As of today, the worksheet and therefore the Schedule A containing a home mortgage deduction, can't be used to file by mail or e-file.
