If you are required to use a 6-digit IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) and plan to efile, you'll still need to use it no matter which account you use, or the efile will reject.   Even if you mail your return, you will need to use the IP PIN.  While it is possible to print and mail a return without the IP PIN, it would mean a significant delay in processing your return as they will need to identify you first if the IP PIN is not provided on the return.

 

You need a new IP PIN each calendar year.   If you are a victim of ID theft that has been investigated by the IRS, they should have sent you a CP01A letter with this year's IP PIN in late December or January.    If you need to retrieve your IP PIN online at the IRS website, here's how:
