Foreign social security tax (Netherlands)
Hi! I am Indonesian and just recently got married to US citizen this November and we are planning to choose the option to regard me as US resident alien for the 2021 tax year. As I understand, I would need to report all of my worldwide income and I will need to pay for the taxes (social sec, medicare, etc, like US citizen and resident alien do. Before coming to the US, I was working in the Netherlands with approximately $28k income in total but I quit working since I moved out from the Netherlands to live in the US. I had a withholding social security tax from my employer in the Netherlands. I am aware that US and Netherlands have an aggreement which eliminate double taxes. However in the website they mention I need to get certified coverage from my employer to be able to not pay US social security tax. Unfortunately, my employer is not able to apply this certified coverage for me since I am no linger working for them. Is that mean now I need to pay for the social sexurity tax to IRS for all the months I worked in the Netherlands?
