Hint: if you live abroad and file for foreign tax exemption, you still need to technically file your state taxes (from state you were previously living in) as "non-resident" status. At least, this was the case for me with NY, now living in Japan and claimed full exemption from all federal & state taxes - form 2555. Hope this helps
