My Utah state return claims I need to fix my state employer ID numbers "Must be 14 characters without hyphens." and I looked at the return it created and all state employer ID numbers are correct, so I think there might be something wrong with the software there.

Is there a way to remove my Utah return so I can e-file my federal return and just mail in my Utah return?

It's a "quirk" in the software that is usually easily fixed.   That is a common problem with Utah state returns, and has been an easy fix for most.

The problem is with the Utah TC-40W form and the Employer/Payer state withholding ID number in Box 15 of a W-2, for instance.   It can also happen with some 1099's if there is Utah withholding.

The employer state withholding ID is 14 characters in length--11 characters than an additional wth at the end.  You are correct that you do not use any hyphens.  However, many people have had to use lower case for the wth to get it to work.    So try a lower case wth and hopefully that will let you efile.

NOTE:  If you have more than one W-2 or 1099 with such a state withholding ID number, you have to change it to lower case on all the forms.   The lower case wth has to be used on all the Utah W-2's, 1099's, in your return that have an employer/payer state withholding ID number.
