Can I pay tax owned via mailing a check if I paid the tax owned with direct debit

I paid my tax via `Withdraw the money from my bank account with direct debit`  for 2019 tax.

However, this year, I would like to mail a check to pay the tax for 2020.

Is this ok? A friend of mine told me that she got fined by paying tax via check since she used 'Withdraw the money from my bank account with direct debit' before.
