Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Hi JamesG1
You stated "An HSA contribution reported on the W-2 box 12 as W is not taxable income and flows to IRS form 8889. " I think what's confusing to the person that started this post and to me is that when I enter the amount from Box 12W into TurboTax my refund drops significantly, which implies it's being taxed. My employer doesn't contribute anything to my HSA. All contributions are made by me through payroll. I understand that my wages in Box 1 exclude my contribution to the HSA; but why is my refund being reduced when I enter the HSA contribution amount in Box 12W? If it's not taxable, then my refund amount should not be affected by the contents of this box.
