it is admittedly very confusing....just because others received it doesn't mean it was lawful.
your parents always have the option of claiming you. The IRS doesn't care whether they do or dont.
But as the dependent, you don't have that same option. (look at the question on the tax return, when you indicate you are a student, it asks CAN you be claimed by others; it doesn't ask WERE you claimed by others). Your answer to the question CAN you be claimed is always the same, regardless of your parent's decision.
As a full time college student, your income has nothing to do with it.
