Yes, I did make this error on my tax return and the consequence was miscalculate social security withholding. Yes, this was my fault, and yes I should have caught it.
This is really a request to the TT software team to add this as an automatic check. It would be a few lines of code to compare the name entered on the W2 to the names of each spouse and at least warn the user that there appears to be an error.
