Get your taxes done using TurboTax

I'm using TurboTax premier.  My husband and I opted into the IP PIN program and received numbers indicating they are the 2021 Identity Protection Pins.  My return has rejected twice - first with these IP PIN's entered and second time with them removed.  We didn't request them until 2021.  Seems like the returns should have been accepted with the IP PINs removed but they rejected also.  HELP!

How did you apply for the 6-digit IP PINs?  Did you get them online by establishing an IRS account and using the "Get an IP PIN" tool at the IRS website, or did you each fill out paper Forms 15227 to apply for them?

If you got them online at the IRS website, did you print out your confirmations that shows the IP PINs?.  Have you verified that you were entering them correctly?  It could have been something as simple as a typo, or getting the 2 IP PINs mixed up.

Is it a joint return?  You said you both opted for IP PINs, but then you used the phrase "my return has rejected."  Did you mean to say instead "our return?"  i.e., is it a joint return?  Or are you filing separate returns?

If you have IP PINs, you cannot efile without them.  The 2021 IP PINs are to be used on any original returns filed during calendar year 2021.

If you don't use the IP PINs, the efile will be rejected with a "missing IP PIN" error message.   So I assume that's what you got with the second attempt.

When you efiled with both IP PINs entered, what was the rejection error code you received?

Did you take care that you did not get the IP PINs mixed up?   Be sure that whoever is listed as "primary taxpayer" on the return used the correct IP PIN for that person, and whoever is listed as "secondary taxpayer" used the correct IP PIN for that secondary person.

Are you entering each 6-digit IP PIN in the correct location (and each for the correct person?)

If using Online TurboTax, here are the steps.   In desktop TurboTax, Federal tab is at the top.

  • With your return open, in the left menu column, click Federal.
  • Then at the top of the screen choose  Other Tax Situations.
  • Find the topic Identity Protection PIN  and click EDIT.
