Just to give an update for anyone else who might be in the same situation, the direct debits for my children's returns did go thru fine using my bank account. They do have minor accounts at the same bank that are linked to my account so I don't know if that helped with the situation to allow the direct debits to go thru.
If there truly is no check to verify that a bank account used to do a direct debit is somehow associated to the tax filer, then that would seem a bit dangerous though. What's to stop anyone from doing a direct debit on some random person's bank account if they know the routing/account number for it?
