I am on J1-visa as research scholar since 01/2018. For 2018 and 2019 I filed my tax return as non-resident alien. For 2020, I must file as resident alien, since I meet the requirements of substantial presence test (more than 183 days in the U.S.). My husband arrived in the US in May/2020 on a J2 visa. My question is, since I am considered as resident alien for 2020, can I file as married filing jointly?
