Get your taxes done using TurboTax
This can be handled a couple of different ways. You could skip entering the actual details of the Form 1099-G and enter the amount reported on the form as Other Income in your Schedule C.
The other choice is to enter the Form 1099-G in the Personal Income section of your return and link the form to your business. TurboTax will help you through this process if the information is reported in box 8 instead of box 6.
The end result is to have the amount reported as income on the Schedule C. If there is ever a question by the IRS, you will have your documentation showing the source of the income.
To enter the Form 1099-G in the appropriate place in the personal section of your return, use these steps:
- On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
- This opens a box where you can type in “grant” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
- The search results will give you an option to “Jump to grant”
- Click on the blue “Jump to grant” link
- Answer the question on the screen with Yes
- Select Other Government Payments reported on Form 1099-G and enter your information
