Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Whether you are a returned or new customer, Form 1098-T is not supported by the tax forms in the TurboTax Free Edition this year, unfortunately.  Especially with Tax Cut and Job Acts TCJA and CARES Act, there are many new tax forms required to claim the same deductions, credits, or forms of income. Some of the situations have transformed into TurboTax Deluxe and TurboTax Live Deluxe, instead of in the Free Edition.  The education tax breaks on Form 8863 and Form 8917 are one of them.

If you have paid tuition amount, you need a Deluxe version.  In the Free online edition, continue to enter the Form 1098-T, the program will prompt you to an upgrade.

Here are the steps:

  • Sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "1098t" and Enter
  • Select Jump to 1098t
  • Follow prompts
  • Next screen, "Your Education Expenses Summary", select Edit
  • You will be prompt to an upgrade to select to use Deluxe.

There is another option for you.  It's called the Tax Freedom which is an IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax.  It is exclusively available online and has its own dedicated website at taxfreedom.com.  It isn't accessible from the "regular" TurboTax.com website and is not the same as the TurboTax Free Edition.  For 2020, if your Adjusted Gross Income AGI is $39,000 or less, you may qualify.

If you have paid qualified education expenses and meet certain requirements, you may qualify for an education tax break including the American Opportunity Tax Credit AOTC, Lifetime Learning Credit or Tuition & Fees deduction. To see if you qualify, here are the links:
