Why does TurboTax think I filed a tax extension in 2019 and 2020? I have never filed a tax extension, and I am not able to complete my filing due to this issue.

The program is asking me to fill in the payments that I made with federal, state and local tax extensions in 2019 and 2020. I am unsure why the program is requiring this information as it is not applicable to my situation. I have never filed a tax extension. Could I have entered something incorrectly that could have triggered this requirement?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Thank you. I have entered 0, however, my state, WA, isn't even on the drop down menu associated with this field. That's why I am stuck. The program is forcing me to fill out the state here. I haven't made money in any state other than WA.

Washington does not have any state income taxes for individuals and as such, there are no filing requirements there.

Therefore, if you lived and worked in Washington for the entire year, you will only have to file a federal income tax return.

In regards to your return stating you have filed an extension for 2020, please log into TurboTax.

  1. Go to the Federal interview section located in the black panel on the left
  2. Select Other Tax Situations
  3. Scroll down to Other Tax Forms and select File an Extension
  4. The next page will be titled Need More Time to File Your Return.  Select No thanks here.  This should remove your extension on the 2020 income tax return.
