If i check the yes box on 1040 worksheet the x appears in red and filing instruction still tell me to send a check for the balance due why?

i entered my bank account info on the info worksheet and requested that my balance due be paid via direct debit to my checking account. when i check this box to direct debit my account the x appears in red and the my info worksheet is labeled as not done. filing instructions also have me paper filing my return and attaching a check for the balance due. I want to efile and have the tax paid via direct debit. How do i accomplish this?
