Get your taxes done using TurboTax
TurboTax doesn't work the way you may think it does. Tax laws change every single year. Therefore, a completely new TurboTax program has to be released each year. You can purchase the CD version that you physically install on your Windows or MAC computer. Or you can use the online version of the program which does not require any software to be installed on your computer.
The CD version for tax year 2020 is out now. But understand the program IS NOT COMPLETE and will not be complete until such time that congress finalizes tax law changes for 2020, ***AND*** the IRS implements those changes.
The online version of TurboTax 2020 has not yet been published on the TurboTax website, and most likely won't be until December at the earliest.
If so, you can't even complete your tax return until you have received all of your 2020 tax reporting documents, such as W-2's, 1099-MISCs, 1099-R's and any other tax reporting documents the law requires to be issued to you for income received in 2020. Issuers of such documents have until Jan 31st, 2021 to issue those documents.
Finally, based or previous years activity I can tell you right now that the IRS will not open up the 2020 filing season until around the 3rd week of January *AT* *BEST*. So if you e-file a return before that, all it's going to do is just "sit there" on the IRS server until they pull it. While it's just sitting there, if you realize you need to change something, you can't. You're just stuck and have to wait it out and *hope* the IRS will reject the return.
Long story short - those who are in a hurry to file their tax return, are commonly waiting the longest to receive their refund as well as have a higher risk of a paper audit. Be patient.
