Get your taxes done using TurboTax

She files a part-year return for both NY and NJ.  All of the income is taxable in NY, some as a nonresident and some as a resident  She will need to answer all of the questions regarding her part-year status, and in the NY return there is a question that asks if she had both nonresident and resident income.  She will answer yes to this question.  Since some of her income is double-taxed (taxed in both NY and NJ at the same time), she should prepare the NY return first.  NJ will provide her with a credit for the tax she pays on the NY income while living in NJ.

She will then prepare the NJ return, and should make sure the program does not double-up her NJ income.  To do this, on the NJ return, you will see a screen titled About Your W-2 State Wage Information.  Because of state programming requirements, TurboTax includes both income lines as part of the NJ income.  The next screen is titled Let's Confirm Your Taxable State Wages from (Employer).  Click on the NY box so that those reported wages are not included on New Jersey's return.
