Only certain people need a 6-digit IP PIN.   A 6-digit IP PIN is a special Identity Protection PIN assigned by the IRS to certain victims of ID theft or to folks who have opted into the IP PIN program.   If you have used an IP PIN in the past, then you will always have to use one.    It is true that everyone who has been assigned an IP PIN by the IRS in the past does need a new one each year, but there is no indication that this XML rejection problem is due to an IP PIN.  An IP PIN rejection has a specific rejection error code and a clear cut solution. 

 

We don't know yet what is causing the X0000-005 rejection for a lot of users this afternoon, and there likely won't be any word until tomorrow.
