Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Generally, a vehicle purchase could potentially give you the following tax breaks:
- Sales tax deduction
- Please see here for how to enter this in the program
- Please see also “Which deduction should I choose: sales tax or income tax?”
- Vehicle registration fee deduction
- Electric Drive Motor Vehicle tax credit
While the Chevrolet Volt could qualify for the Electric Drive Motor Vehicle credit, you may lose eligibility if you're not the original owner of the vehicle. The best thing to do is to explore the sections below to let the program check your eligibility.
- First sign in to My TurboTax.
- Next, click the orange Take me to my return button
- From inside your
return, click Federal Taxes
If in Self-Employed or Home & Business versions with no Federal Taxes tab, you may need to click Personal instead - Then, click Deductions
and Credits from the white menu bar at the top
Then, you may need to click Continue/I'll choose what I work on, and progress through a few interview screens - In the Cars
and Other Things You Own section, click show more
You may need to click the button to see all tax breaks for the other sections to appear - You'll have the option to enter information in the Car Registration Fees and Energy-Efficient Vehicles sections here
