Turbotax and other online tax filers are permitted to organize tax returns through an agreement with the IRS that they would provide the service for free to most tax payers (that is, those with simple tax returns.)
To do this, you must Google search TurboTax Freedom Edition. Once you go to this website, they will ask you several times if you want to do this or that, and all the buttons for this and that redirect you back to their main site without you knowing. So you have to be careful on your click throughs.
Turbotax is a scam, but if you know what you're doing, you do get the filing for free.
