You cannot claim yourself as a dependent if someone has already claimed you. Your return will be rejected.
If you lived with them for all of 2019, they provide more than half of her support, and you had income of less than $4,200, it is possible that they can claim you as a dependent (qualifying relative).
Rules for Claiming a Dependent
There are two ways you may go about claiming yourself:
- Your father agrees to amend his return and remove you as a dependent. You can then file on your own after the amendment is processed.
- You can print and mail your return, claiming yourself. The IRS will then see that you are claimed on two returns, and they will work to resolve by requesting documentation from each party.
