Get your taxes done using TurboTax
- @hydn If you're referring to accidently claiming yourself on your 2019 return (or 2018), and the IRS didn't already correct your mistake for you, consider whether you received a refund, as you'll likely have to pay that back. You don't necessarily have to amend your return by today.
- Note: If you're 17 to 24, AND your parents already claimed you, not only would they not qualify for the xtra $500 for dependents on their stimulus (dependents have to be 16 or under to qualify for the xtra $500), but you also wouldn't qualify for any stimulus payment at all.
- if you made a huge mistake on your return, or if you forgot to report something important (like being married), you'll want to fix it by amending your previously filed tax return with the 1040X. I would get in touch with support here, if you filed with turbotax. They'll be able to help you with the 1040X.
- I'm not telling you what to do, but unless your parents hadn't already filed, and are now UNABLE to claim you until you fix it, I wouldn't worry about trying to get that amendment filed by today. Even if you amend today, it's going to take quite awhile for the IRS to handle your amended return, which would likely affect your parents trying to file and claim you anytime soon anyway.
