If my spouse is granted a SSN for the 2020 tax season, instead of an ITIN which he currently has, will we be eligible for the stimulus money if filing jointly.
Currently, I have a SSN, and my spouse has an ITIN. We are waiting (due to financial hardship) to file for his green card in order to get him a SSN. Since there is an ITIN on our 2019 tax return we are BOTH not eligible for the Covid CARE Federal stimulus payments.
If we are able to get him a SSN, and then we will both have one, will receive the payment (if any) for the 2020 tax season.
Currently we are receiving nothing (even though I am a legal US citizen who has always paid taxes and has a valid SSN) because he has an ITIN on our returns.
I understand that things are changing quickly, or the Gov may not have even given guidelines for this. If that is case, please let me know where I can look for this information now or in the future.
Thank you for your time.
