So, I went to the link provided, it says that if someone claimed me as a dependent I don't qualify.  Would I still be receiving my stimulus based off of my 2018 tax return?  My thing is its new and I am now living on my own as of the start of the year.  I worked all through 2017 and filed 2018, but due to medical had to live with my parents for that year of 2019 so they were able to claim me.  Now that they no longer can claim me on their 2020 return and I will be filing my own return in 2020, does this still mean I am up the creek without a paddle because of 2019?  Im just looking for answers because at the end of the month if this stimulus check doesnt come im going to upside down on the lease I just signed last month.  Perfect time to move out, huh?

If you have already filed your 2019 return, you won't get a stimulus check FOR NOW because you were a dependent in 2019. However:

  • If you have NOT filed for 2019 and were NOT a dependent in 2018, the IRS *may* issue a stimulus check based on your 2018 return & non-dependent status. (If you filed for 2019, they won't look at 2018. There's also a very slim chance they could look at your parents' 2019 return and still reject you.)
  • Even if all else fails & you don't get a check this year, since you won't be a dependent in 2020 you will be able to claim the stimulus as a refundable credit on your 2020 return filed in 2021. (That's part of why the stimulus law is so convoluted.) That won't help you on your rent, but you'll eventually get it.
