Can we claim as a dependent our homeless son (38, with no income except food stamps), whom we supported from his attempted suicide on 6 Jan until his death on 9 Sep 2016?
Our son was an alcoholic drug addict. No skills except manual labor, no job, no transportation. He was facing a felony OVI conviction, so attempted suicide. Since he was evicted for trashing the place he lived he had no place to go after a short hospital stay. Except for a 45-day stay in a lock-down rehab treatment program, we took him into our home and provided all of his housing, food, clothing, and transportation to court-ordered parole meetings and rehabilitation classes. In spite of our care for him, he obtained drugs and his death was ruled an overdose.
