It depends.

 

In light of the recent Covid-19 pandemic, the IRS has actually pushed back the due date of individual tax returns and any taxes due to July 5, 2020.  You do not need to make any payments prior to this date.  The state of California and Indiana have also followed suit and have the same filing deadline.

 

Therefore, you would not be liable to pay any of your taxes until July 15th.  You can still extend and pay your tax obligation at this time should you need to.  The IRS and state taxing agencies will not be assessing any interest and penalties until this new filing date.
