In most cases, the total of the state incomes in box 16 will equal the amount of box 1 but not always.
- Your payroll provider believes that one or the other state has a claim on a portion of all of your taxable income,
- One state may consider a payment taxable income differently from the Federal taxable income, or
- There could be an error.
