Hyphens do take up a character count place, they are just not necessary for your situation. We have found that depending on the state, sometimes there are a lot of hyphens in the count. If you only have 1 or 2, that would be fine. The point is the numbers on the policy for identifying you. Those internal use hyphens are just a nuisance to us and can keep you from being identified since everyone has hyphens, they are not unique to you.
