Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Yes, it does matter and it can be very important to your tax return depending on the type of distribution being reported.
It should not make a difference to your bottom line refund or balance due, but certain types of distributions will add another form to your tax return that would be tied to a single individual and not a joint tax return.
You should go back to the 1099-R section of your return and make the correction to show whose 1099-R is being reported.
When you go back to take a look at the Form 1099-R that you entered, there is a question on the screen titled, “Tell Us Which 1099-R You Have” where you will designate This Form 1099-R Belongs To next to your name and your spouse’s name. Choose the appropriate one and be sure to answer the follow-up questions with that person in mind.
To go back to the 1099-R section of your return, use these steps:
On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
This opens a box where you can type in “1099-R” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-R”
- Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-R” link
Click Edit beside any 1099-Rs that you have already entered to verify the ownership of the form and make any necessary changes. Then Continue through all the follow-up questions.
