Are you trying to efile a return, and it requested a 6-digit verification code? If so, you have to leave the screen open that asked for the code while you use a second window or a second tab to check your email and get the code (or did you have the code come in a text message?). All the major browsers can open a second window or a second tab. Then once you obtain the code, you enter the code in the original window that you left open. If you close that first window, the code will no longer work--it will be seen as invalid or "expired."
If that's what you're talking about, you can go back to the same screen and ask for a new code. Then leave that screen open while you go get the code.
Another option is to leave the original window open, and if you have a smartphone, you can use the phone to check your email to get the code. And then enter it in the window you left open.
